Today our text comes from John 18:33-37, a Gospel text for Christ the King Sunday.  This Sunday is the last Sunday of the old church year, preparing us to wait in expectation of this coming King once again in Advent.  This will therefore also be our last week of devotions in this format.  Next week we return to written devotions on Bible texts.  For Advent, these texts will come from the book of Ruth.  But first: we reflect on Christ our King from John 18, a crucifixion account that Christian tradition has generally seen as the "corronation" of Christ the King.

May God bless you as you hear his word today.

Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

“Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”

“Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”

Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”

“You are a king, then!” said Pilate.

This is the Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

As you journey on, go with the blessing of God:

Guide us waking, O Lord, and guard us sleeping,

That awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep rest in his peace.

May Almighty God bless, preserve, and keep us, this day and forevermore.

Amen.
